Description
Lance-Leaf Coreopsis is a cheerful, sun-loving native perennial known for its abundant golden-yellow daisy-like flowers. Blooming from late spring through mid-summer, each bloom features a deep yellow center surrounded by broad, notched petals that brighten prairies and gardens alike. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves form a tidy, low mound of foliage that remains attractive even after flowering. Adaptable and long-blooming, Lance-Leaf Coreopsis adds vibrant color and ecological value to meadows, roadsides, and sunny gardens, thriving in poor, dry soils where many plants struggle.
Ecological Value
Coreopsis lanceolata provides nectar and pollen for a wide range of pollinators, including native bees, butterflies, and beetles. It is especially attractive to sweat bees and bumblebees, and its blooms are frequently visited by butterflies such as Pearl Crescents and Painted Ladies. The seeds are eaten by finches and other small birds, extending its wildlife value into fall and winter. Its deep roots help stabilize soil and prevent erosion, making it an important plant for restoring disturbed or degraded sites.
Ideal Growing Conditions
Lance-Leaf Coreopsis thrives in full sun and dry to medium, well-drained soils, naturally occurring in prairies, savannas, and open slopes. It prefers sandy or gravelly loam but tolerates clay and poor soils. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and requires little maintenance. It performs best in lean soils with low fertility, as overly rich conditions may lead to floppy growth. Allowing some self-seeding will help maintain healthy, naturalized colonies over time.
Landscape Uses
Ideal for pollinator gardens, prairies, meadows, and roadside plantings, Lance-Leaf Coreopsis brings brightness, resilience, and biodiversity to sunny landscapes. It pairs beautifully with Butterfly Weed, Purple Prairie Clover, and Little Bluestem for a dynamic, low-maintenance planting. Its cheerful blooms attract pollinators for weeks, while its fine foliage provides texture and visual continuity throughout the growing season. Hardy, adaptable, and ecologically valuable, Lance-Leaf Coreopsis is one of the most enduring and beloved native wildflowers for adding warmth and life to open, sunny spaces.
