Description

Stiff Coreopsis is a cheerful, sun-loving native perennial that brightens prairies and roadsides with its brilliant yellow blooms. Its daisy-like flowers feature golden petals surrounding darker yellow centers, creating a vibrant midseason display that draws the eye and supports pollinators in abundance. The upright, branching stems are sturdy and square, topped with clusters of blooms that last for weeks. Its distinctive, deeply divided foliage gives it a fine texture and sets it apart from other coreopsis species. Adaptable and resilient, Stiff Coreopsis thrives in dry, open landscapes and brings both color and ecological value to native gardens.

Ecological Value

Coreopsis palmata provides nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, and beetles, supporting a diverse range of native pollinators during midsummer. It is a host plant for several butterfly and moth species, including the Wavy-lined Emerald and the Silvery Checkerspot. After flowering, its seed heads provide food for finches and other small birds, while the standing stems offer habitat for overwintering insects. Deep roots help stabilize soil and improve drought resilience, making Stiff Coreopsis an ecologically important species for prairie restoration and pollinator support.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Stiff Coreopsis thrives in full sun and dry to medium, well-drained soils, naturally occurring in upland prairies, savannas, and roadsides. It prefers sandy or gravelly soils but adapts well to loam and even light clay if drainage is good. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and long-lived. It performs best in lean soils with limited competition from aggressive neighbors. The plant spreads slowly by rhizomes, forming tidy colonies that hold their shape and contribute lasting structure to prairie communities.

Landscape Uses

Ideal for prairie gardens, meadows, and pollinator plantings, Stiff Coreopsis adds vibrant color and texture to summer landscapes. It pairs beautifully with Purple Prairie Clover, Butterfly Weed, and Little Bluestem for a classic prairie combination. Its bright yellow blooms stand out against the greens and purples of native grasses and wildflowers, providing visual warmth and balance. Tough, dependable, and ecologically rich, Stiff Coreopsis is a foundational prairie species that supports pollinators and brings enduring beauty to dry, sunny environments.
