Description

Tufted Hairgrass is a graceful, cool-season native grass that forms tidy, fountain-like clumps of fine green foliage. In early summer, delicate, airy flower plumes rise above the leaves, creating a soft, cloud-like effect that shimmers in light breezes and catches morning and evening light. The plumes often persist beyond peak bloom, extending the plant’s ornamental value and adding subtle movement and texture to the landscape. Even when not in flower, the neat clumps provide structure and a refined presence throughout the growing season.

Ecological Value

As a native grass, Tufted Hairgrass plays an important role in supporting insect life that forms the foundation of many food webs. The foliage offers cover for small wildlife, while the developing seed heads can provide seasonal food for birds. Its presence helps create diverse plant communities that support healthy ecosystems, particularly in moisture-variable habitats.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Tufted Hairgrass prefers full sun to part sun and grows best in soils with medium to moist moisture levels. It tolerates heavier soils and periodic wetness, making it well suited for sites that experience fluctuating moisture. While adaptable, it performs best when given consistent moisture, especially during establishment and early summer growth.

Landscape Uses

This grass is an excellent choice for rain gardens, wet meadows, and mixed perennial borders where a refined, soft-textured grass is desired. It pairs beautifully with moisture-loving perennials and other native grasses, adding movement and early-season interest without overwhelming surrounding plants. Tufted Hairgrass is especially effective in naturalistic plantings where subtle texture and ecological function are equally important.
