The restoration of native plant species to our suburban landscapes is vital. We have experienced an alarming decline in our insects and birds in the last few decades. This is largely due to habitat loss and is a clear sign of an increasingly unhealthy ecosystem. An ecosystem that is unhealthy for birds and insects is also unhealthy for humans. The quality of our air and water, the stability of our weather, and the abundance of our food choices are dependent on the insects and birds that are dependent on native plants.
Fortunately, we all have the power to help our local ecosystem by incorporating native plants in our home, business, and municipal landscapes. Adding some of these to your landscape will create beauty and help in creating a healthier environment for us all.
The Timbers of Palos Condominium Association in Palos Hills, IL has pledged to be a positive leader in our community by incorporating native plants into their landscapes in a multi-year plan. They have already converted their planting boxes along the main drive to native plants and have added native shrubs along their fence line. Future projects being considered are the addition of shade tolerant native groundcovers in areas where the tree cover prevents lawn, and the addition of native plants around their ponds to stabilize the soil and prevent erosion.

Sag Moraine would like to thank the Timbers residents and HOA Board for their dedication to improving our local ecosystem. They are truly leaders in our community and set a wonderful example for other HOA’s. We will keep everyone posted on future projects at the Timbers as they do their part to help restore our environment, one plant at a time.
